Close to Home

Close to Home reveals Papou’s visualization of the emotional world alongside the South Florida artist community. The exhibit is centered around the intimacy and boldness of personal experience conversing with the viewer through textures, colors, association and perspective.

Close to Home is a multigenerational exhibition about how intimacy, community, ancestry and creative collaboration shape contemporary art. Within that larger conversation, Papou turns her body into a spiritual conduit. She paints with her hands, moving between the inner world and the physical one, so her canvases are more than pictures of an interior landscape. They are evidence that she went there and came back. Her subjects, often intertwined with the fragility and sensuality of personal experience, carry a deeper meaning of facing yourself in conversations about culture, community, the future, and the past.
